The first UFC event of 2021 was headlined Saturday by arguably the greatest featherweight of all time, Max Holloway, and the striking sensation, Calvin Kattar. The event held everything from decisions to spectacular performances! Here’s how the main card in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, went down last night:
Punahele Soriano def. Dusko Todorovic via. 1st RND KO/TKO
The first fight of the main card was between two young undefeated prospects, which ended in the knockout of Dusko Todorovic. Punahele Soriano showcased incredible striking and toughness in his return to the octagon. The Hawaiian dominated the fight after the initial knockdown of Todorovic. With his first fight since 2019, Soriano looks to make his presence known in 2021.
Alessio Di Chirico def. Joaquin Buckley via. 1st RND KO/TKO
The knockouts in the first round were the tale of the tape for this card. The hype-train was derailed with the early knockout of Joaquin Buckley last night. Di Chirico outstriked Buckley in the early part of the fight, and then proceeded to finish him off with a head kick. This win sits Di Chirico at 13-5, snapping a 3-fight losing streak.
Li Jingliang def. Santiago Ponzinibbio via. 1st RND KO/TKO
Li Jingliang became the third fighter to win via. first round knockout with his flurry of strikes against Ponzinibbio. Li held control for the majority of the short-lived fight, and finished it off with a combination that ended with Ponzinibbio on his back. This becomes Li’s 9th career knockout, and proves he still has what it takes to compete in the welterweight division.
Carlos Condit def. Matt Brown via. Unanimous Decision
The two seasoned veterans finally duked it out as the co-main event — after many years of trying to set up this fight. Condit was able to outstrike Brown with 39 significant strikes to Brown’s 28. Condit also produced more takedowns, but with less control time. This victory lifts Condit’s record to 32-13, while Brown becomes 24-18.
Max Holloway def. Calvin Kattar via. Unanimous Decision
The Hawaiian Sensation proves why he is the best featherweight in UFC history with the utter domination of Calvin Kattar. Holloway landed 445 significant strikes, with 274 head strikes in his decision victory. Kattar puts his toughness on display, withstanding combo after combo from the former champion. With the win, this puts Holloway back in the win column, after questionable decision losses to Alexander Volkanovski.
