Several exciting fights topped off last weekend on Fight Island & UFC 254 that left us with two things: winners and losers. Dominant performances and electric finishes lit up the event. There were two important and tide-changing fights — those being Robert Whittaker vs Jared Cannonier, & Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Justin Gaejthe.
Khabib Nurmagomedov def. Justin Gaejthe via Submission in Second Round
The lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov became undisputed as he defeated the #1 contender, Justin Gaejthe. Khabib won in the second round via triangle choke. Khabib became 29-0 after a convincing win over the #1 contender. Proceeding the fight, the lightweight champion announced his retirement, ending a truly legendary career. Nurmagomedov went on to say, “[my mother didn’t] want I go fight without father, but I promised her it’s gonna be my last fight.” With this retirement, it leaves a stacked lightweight division with a vacant belt.
Robert Whittaker def. Jared Cannonier via Unanimous Decision
In a bout presenting the #1 contender and #2 contender, the #1 fighter becomes victorious. Robert Whittaker wins his second fight after losing to still-champion Israel Adensanya, both being against top five contenders. With this victory, Whittaker is lined up to rematch against the Middleweight champion.
