60 Picks In Basket-Bol: Surprises, Tears, Shockers That Made The NBA Draft So Interesting Tonight (6/21/19)

“And with the _ overall pick of the 2019 NBA Draft, the ______ select _____”
Those are the words that every college player dreams of… The advancement from collegiate to professional competition. So many players sacrifice so much just to hear those words, and yet very little do end up hearing them.
This is what’s going through the minds of the top college recruits. And once their name gets called, the whole atmosphere of the room completely shifts. There is this certain nervous energy — a suspense that builds — when there is a wait for a pick. Once the pick is made, there is a lot of raw emotion that comes from the draftee and their family. Tonight was no different.

It all began with the first overall pick — which was given to the New Orleans Pelicans. In fact, the moment that the Pelicans’ office found out that the results of the draft lottery had given them that pick, they went completely nuts (Click on link below to watch video of them)!https://www.nba.com/pelicans/video/teams/pelicans/2019/05/15/2608219/1557883756430-pels-lottery-no-1-pick-reaction-2608219
This adds to their recent trade of Anthony Davis to the Lakers, where in return they received Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingraham, and Josh Hart. Each player is young and extremely talented.
It was more than just the first pick, it meant that they got to choose Zion Williamson. I mean the guy is practically a household name already, and he literally just joined the NBA a few hours ago. Every since high-school, Zion’s basketball career has caught the eyes of many viewers. From everything from shooting threes to 360 windmill dunks — he can do it all. He attended Duke last year, one of the most successful college basketball programs in the country, and continued to play with a unique intensity. This intensity comes from a unique mindset and a drive that cannot be humanly stopped. When asked in an interview about who he models his style-of-play after, the #1 pick said,
“LeBron with trying to be an all-around player. [Michael] Jordan with how hard he played on offense and defense. Russell Westbrook with the tenacity he brings and Kawhi Leonard with just his business-like mentality.”
He pretty much chose the most dominant qualities of the most dominant players to ever step on the court.
To kick off the night, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver came out and stated the following:
“With the first pick of the 2019 NBA Draft, the New Orleans Pelicans select Zion Williamson.”
In his post-pick interviews, Zion was very emotional. He had worked his whole life to get to this moment. And the best part? This is just the beginning.

The next two picks were fairly predictable. Ja Morant was the second pick and went to the Memphis Grizzlies. Soon later, it was announced that the Knicks had picked up R.J. Barrett from Duke and took him as the third overall pick.

100% honesty though, I was pretty surprised that Bol Bol was the 44th pick. Son of the Iconic NBA giant, Manute Bol, he was picked up by the Miami Heat in the second round as pick number 44, then was traded to the Denver Nuggets.
I believe that he will make an excellent addition to the team. The Nuggets are one of the most youngest teams in the NBA and are quite full of talent, but sadly lack in the height department. Whenever Nikola Jokic and Mason Plumlee get tired, they don’t have many tall players to turn to. Bol Bol is 7’1″ with a 7’8″ wingspan, so to say the least he’s going to give opposing teams a hard time in the paint — both sides of the court. This is why he is my pick for the most dominant “sleeper” in the draft.

Overall, tonight was an exhilarating night in basketball. Not only for the players but for the fans as well. It marks the introduction into the exposure of the new players to the league and the adaptation of how the game is basketball is played…
