On This Date Three Years Ago: Deshaun Watson Throws Game-Winning TD For The 2017 CFP Title (1/9/20)

On January 9, 2017 history was made. Clemson handed Alabama their first loss in a College Football Playoff National Championship in over a decade. It was a complete upset that shocked the whole world of sports.

Alabama had previously won four titles in the seven years leading up to this game. They were essentially the Patriots of college football. But they met their match when they had to face Deshaun Watson and the red-hot Clemson Tigers.

Down by 3 points, 28-31, Clemson had six seconds to score on their opponent’s two-yard line. There was only time for one play. Scrambling to his right, Deshaun Watson found a wide-open Hunter Renfrow in the end zone — and with just one second to spare, the Tigers went up 35-31 on the Tide.

MODERN CONNECTION:

Since this crazy play, both Deshaun Watson and Hunter Renfrow have found success in the National Football League. Currently, Watson is the starting quarterback for the Houston Texans — who take on the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Divisional Round of the NFL Playoffs this Sunday. Renfrow has found success with the Oakland Raiders by playing the wide receiver, and even specialist positions — emerging as one of the most versatile receivers in the AFC West Division.
